I was searching through some old files to find an appropriate pic to add to the GoldCoast Croyde Longboard Classic (presented by Frubob) Press Release and came across this shot of local lad Zak Lawton, taken in Marocco a couple of years ago. It ticked a couple of boxes, eg long board and Croyde connection so in it went.

Just while it was on the screen I cropped it as above and thought, that looks like an ok portrait, which I didn’t see at the time.

The trip to Maroc was to coach the English Junior Team at the European Championships, and an ideal opportunity to grab some portraits of the rising stars of the English surf scene. Portraits of surfers are generally short lived, mainly because of fashion, haircuts, growing up and sponsorship changes plus many surfers are not natural models – they fidget and have a low tolerance of anything that keeps them out of the water, which is fair enough I guess as this is the same characteristic that made them a good surfer in the first place. So there’s not that many good one’s around at any one time.

Anyhow, here a are a few long lost and previously unpublished portrait attempts of the Team. The one that stands out for me is the one of Lewis with his cheeky grin and gansta posture. Click on the pix if you want them to be big.
