Lundy time: Joon 2025. We were gutted to hear that our week’s stay in Tibbetts was cancelled due to problems with the new waterpump installation (Tibbetts has its own Well and the quaint but outdated battery waterpump was being upgraded). Instead we were offered Hanmers, a corrugated iron and timber hut built in 1898 by fisherman (and island handyman) George Thomas, on a site that was popular for picnics by the then island owners, the Heaven family. Originally called ‘The Palace’ it has stunning views over the landing bay and beyond to the North Devon coast.

Tucked under the cliff, it is protected from the westerly winds (ideal in Winter) and provided the perfect vantage point to watch the Waverley dock and disgorge its 600 passengers for a brief pit stop on the island. The pub got busy but luckily we had some puffin gin to picnic on.
Like Tibbetts, Hanmers has its fans and followers (are they called Hanmerites?), and you can see why. It’s light and airy, has amazing views and the sunrises are amazeballing. This is the summer solstice sunrise; 5.30am and the start of a hot day and you don’t have to get up, like I did, you could just open the curtains and watch it in bed with a cup of tea.
