One of my favourite places to photograph in autumn, luckily, is just on the doorstep. Exmoor rises 1000 feet out of the sea on the North Devon coast and takes the brunt of the Atlantic weather but the area is interlaced with hidden valleys where the trees are more sheltered and the leaves hang on a bit longer to show their full autumn colours.
Silver birch in the West Lyn valley.
Stormzy on top.
Sunken Devon lane carpeted with copper.
The East Lyn valley.
It’s not all beech and oak, this hornbeam looking splendid along Oare Water.
It’s a ‘mast year’ for acorns and berries, also plenty of fungi.
Opposites attract on the colour wheel. East Lyn.
Beech shadows and a gate, Badgworthy.
Robert’s bridge.
Reflections on water passing by.
Oare water reflections detail. A submerged rock throws up a disturbance in the force. This photo is dedicated to my co-editor of the The Beautiful North Devon Calendar 2026; Kathleen Spears. She taught me to ‘get my head outa my ass and shoot for yourself rather than other people..’. I love it, let me know what you think in the comments.
