Another circular walk on Exmoor and this time it’s a classic, or the classic. Up Bossington hill.
Starting at the iconic Selworthy Church, which is still periodically coated with a mixture of lime and tallow to protect it from the elements, making the distinctive white building visible for miles around. Up to the top of Bossington Hill for some genuinely impressive and beautiful views across the channel and over Porlock vale to Foreland and up to Dunkery Beacon. Then back through the woods via the pretty hamlet of Allerford and it’s historic 15th century pack horse bridge. If you time it right, you may be able to sample a proper cream tea at the picture postcard Perriwinkle tea rooms on Selworthy green, with jam on top of cream of course.
Church of All Saints, Selworthy.
Resplendent in heather,
the view from the top,
is really
truly
deeply
madly
utterly
belting.
Wood.
Medieval banks.
Aller brook.
Allerford is in the Domesday book as “Alresford – forda Ralph de Limesy Mill”
